Lighthouse Design Ships VarioData PRO - Advanced Version of
Workgroup Database for NEXTSTEP
Application enables non-programmers to easily build scalable
multi-user databases, for workgroup enterprise deployment
SEPTEMBER 26, 1994 - SAN MATEO, CA - Lighthouse Design, Ltd. today
announced that it has shipped VarioData PRO 3.1, an advanced
version of VarioData, its multi-user flatfile database. VarioData PRO is
available now for the Intel-, HP PA-RISC-, and Motorola-
based versions of the object-oriented NEXTSTEP operating
environment.
VarioData provides users with a simple point and click interface
to workgroup database design and information management. VarioData
PRO adds SQL back-end support to VarioData, allowing customers
within client/server computing environments to migrate flatfile
databases and entry forms to more scalable SQL back ends. Support
is provided for Oracle, Sybase, Informix, and Interbase databases.
Targeted at enterprises with workgroup data management needs,
VarioData PRO is suited to a spectrum of tasks, from customer
databases and departmental inventories to bug tracking systems.
VarioData PRO takes full advantage of NEXTSTEP, providing an
intuitive interface for non-programmers to actually build and
deploy custom mixed-media workgroup databases.
"VarioData PRO includes VarioData's ease-of-use and standard user
interface, and adds the SQL scalability our enterprise users are
increasingly demanding," said Jonathan Schwartz, president of
Lighthouse Design. "With these enhancements, workgroup data
managers can now smoothly link VarioData databases and entry forms
to the SQL engines on which they run their organizations. We're
pleased to add this critical database product to our suite of
productivity applications and to continue delivering flexible
solutions to the NEXTSTEP market."
Like VarioData, VarioData PRO comes bundled with VarioBuilder, a
database design tool. Users with no knowledge of programming
create data entry forms simply by dragging and dropping text,
time, date, number and currency fields onto layout windows.
VarioBuilder simplifies the creation of workgroup databases by
combining support for drag and drop files and images, along with
a variety of standard NEXTSTEP interface elements such as pop-up
lists, buttons and check boxes.
VarioBuilder's point and click formula editor allows users to
attach custom behavior to buttons, enabling databases to send
electronic mail messages, print or fax reports, record revision
histories and audit trails, access system calls and scripts,
and even pass information to mission-critical applications.
VarioData PRO includes transparent record locking to prevent users
from unwittingly writing over vital information. Record locking
restricts write access to a record when it is being edited, while
allowing other users to view it. VarioData PRO also provides
several levels of security, including database password
protection, with multiple levels of customizable user groups
to control access down to individual data fields.
For databases that grow in scale, and developers that wish to
migrate from flatfiles to a SQL back-end, VarioData PRO offers
complete access to Oracle, Sybase, Informix, and Interbase
databases. VarioData PRO also supports Import/Export access to
the merge formats for Microsoft Word, FrameMaker, FileMaker, and
a variety of other applications.
VarioData PRO is priced at $1295 and VarioData is priced at $695.
Both are available now for Motorola-, Intel- and HP PA-RISC-based
versions of NEXTSTEP. Academic discounts are available for
VarioData.
